Sound installation by Andy Graydon - 02/25/2010

Andy Graydon, a long time partner and collaborator, recently exhibited his latest work in Berlin - Untitled (plate tectonics). It is a fascinating study of the experience of space (specifically museum space) through sound.

Below is a description of the work.

Installation @ Intiman - 01/07/2010

GSD recently completed a projection design installation at the Intiman Theatre in Seattle.

The work titled "Farmhouse" was commissioned to support the Intiman's production of Abe Lincoln in Illinois. A stunning but dark modernist courtyard was unified in a pale blue field of slowly moving dried corn stalks. Fine white lines cut the scene vertically recalling the stark simple posts of 19th century rural architecture as well as echoing the  slender columns surrounding the space.

Good practice - 10/02/2009

There is a little piece of paper tacked to my board here that came from a work by Fischli and Weiss. It is from a tongue-in-check work by the artists where they cribbed a piece of found motivational text and then had it enlarged and painted on the exterior of a building.

Tongue-in-cheek or not, the list is a good daily reminder for me.

Here is the list. Also check out the link below that for some photos of the actual work.

How to work better

Good localization - 08/31/2009

Good localization. Hard to find, even though it doesn't have to be. Even the big guns make mistakes. Remember the Microsoft debacle with the doctored picture used on the Polish website? (check it out) Some call this racist, but more than that I'd call it a shoddy attempt at localization.

Dataton Watchout Show - 08/04/2009

GSD just completed a keynote show using Dataton Watchout for Microsoft's MGX FY10. Working with The Edge Creative, the media we created stretched around a curved screen that measured 20'x156'. The 60 minute show incorporated over 100 still slides and full screen videos.

The latest version of Watchout was used which allowed the presenter the flexibility to drive the content on the large screen via a hand clicker. As a result the client decided not to use Powerpoint during the show (a first!).

Fluid media - 04/27/2009

Do you work in print? Yes.
Do you create videos? Yes.
Do you develop websites? Check.
What about digital signage? Yes.
Do you work on events and tradeshows? Yup.

You've got to work with people that are fluent in all media.

Customer service - 04/14/2009

Good customer service is rare.

In order to get it right, you need more than politeness. You need to be upfront on what you are delivering and then deliver it.

Think of a restaurant. Your waiter may be excellent but if your roast chicken comes to your table cold, undercooked and is overpriced, you'll leave very disappointed. On the flip side, your waiter might be horribly mean but deliver a great meal to your table. No one is leaving either one of these situations with good feelings about the customer service.

New site launch - 04/09/2009

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new site!
